Mercedes-Benz 170 Service and Restoration

We have performed many “sentimental” restorations for our clients over the years. There was the 190SL bought new by the owner’s father, the British sports car driven during the collage years of a 300SL owner, and a number of others that had been part of the family for many years.

170 S

Our favorite is the story behind this 1951 Mercedes-Benz 170 S Cabriolet. Our clients purchased the car on their honeymoon in Germany and subsequently toured Europe before shipping it back to the states. They drove and maintained the car as a weekend cruiser for many years until it was too tired to be reliable. The car sat in a barn for a number of years until they commissioned Oldtimer Restoration Center to do a total restoration. These 170 cabriolets are fairly rare here in the US and it took a few years to do the work and source all the original parts for a truly authentic restoration. When we delivered the car to their home in Vermont the couple had built a beautiful barn attached to the house to store the car.

The first Mercedes-Benz 170 S appeared in 1949 as luxury car with a 1767cc inline 4-cylinder engine producing 52 horsepower. Based on the 4-door 170 V, the S model was produced as a 2 door convertible, with seating for 2 as a Cabriolet A and 4 as a Cabriolet B. A more luxurious interior, as well as double wishbone and coil spring suspension also set it apart from the base 170 V.
